P5/6 - Bridges
The pupils in Mrs Buckley’s class in Clare Primary School have been applying their expertise on the recently damaged Clare Bridge. This fine example of Georgian construction, which is almost as famous as Clare crossroads, was damaged by Storm ‘Éowyn’.
As part of their classroom studies the class have recently been learning about bridges. Part of this sequence of lessons involved a visit to school by a team of civil engineers from local company ‘ARUP’ led by Mr. Richard Reid. The children enjoyed participating in a range of fun activities designed to illustrate key civil engineering principles relating to forces.
So it was with great interest that the class visited their local landmark to see first hand some design principles and assess the damage. The follow up conversations back in school generated some interesting theories from excited young people, some of whom no doubt will go on to have a career in this essential sector of Northern Ireland life.
